SHENZHEN, China (2 November 2018) – BGI and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) have signed an agreement to expand their collaboration in public health research, supported by MGI sequencing platforms. The partnership marks a significant step in bringing MGI’s sequencing technology into South America.
The agreement was signed by Marco Aurelio Krieger, Vice President of Fiocruz, and Duncan Yu, Executive Vice President of BGI Group and President of MGI. It establishes a framework for joint scientific research and educational exchange, including the development of sequencing laboratories and teams focused on molecular testing and public health applications.
This agreement builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier in the year, which focused on infectious disease prevention and control in China and Brazil. The collaboration also involves partners such as Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microbiology and Immunology.
Following the signing, the Fiocruz delegation visited MGI’s operations in Shenzhen and toured the China National Genebank, where they met with BGI Chairman Wang Jian. Both organisations highlighted a shared commitment to advancing accessible, high-throughput sequencing technologies to support public health research and improve outcomes for local populations.
