MGI Trailblazing Path to Sub Hundred-dollar Genome at VIB conference

MGI Highlights Breakthrough $100 Whole Genome Sequencing at VIB Conference

Ghent, Belgium, 29 March 2023 – MGI Tech Co., Ltd. (“MGI”), a company committed to building core tools and technology to lead life science, highlighted breakthrough whole genome sequencing (WGS) prices using MGI’s innovative DNBSEQ-T20×2* and DNBSEQ-T7* ultra-high throughput platforms at the Revolutionizing Next-Generation Sequencing (5th edition) conference, hosted by VIB on 27-28 March in Ghent, Belgium.

Achieving the $100 Genome

The genetic sequencing industry has long aimed to reduce the cost of genome sequencing to $100 or less per unit. At the Advances in Genome Biology and Technology (AGBT) General Meeting 2023, MGI achieved this milestone by lowering the price of WGS to under $100 with the DNBSEQ-T20×2*. During the VIB conference, Dr. Yong Hou, General Manager of MGI Europe and Africa, presented “Trailblazing Path to Sub Hundred-dollar Genome” in Plenary Session 3: Outbreak & Population Scale, reiterating the breakthrough pricing and accessibility to the European market.

“This historical milestone and the commercialisation of DNBSEQ-T20×2* will enable the $100 human genome era and drive the development and expansion of genomics globally,” said Dr. Yong Hou. “With an ever-growing regional team, Customer Experience Centre in Riga and multiple lab facilities, we are ready to support local customers in accessing affordable, cutting-edge technologies across Europe and Africa.”

DNBSEQ-T20×2* Technology and Performance

Using MGI’s innovative dip-immersion biochemistry, the DNBSEQ-T20×2* improves sequencing efficiency, scale, and reduces costs. A single system can produce up to 50,000 WGS per year for under $100 per 30x human genome, including instrument depreciation, in a smaller footprint than DNBSEQ-T10×4*. It supports six slides simultaneously, producing up to 42Tb per run with PE100 or 72Tb per run with PE150. The platform features an open modular system, revolutionising the traditional closed biochemical circuit structure.

“Having set the record in single-machine throughput, DNBSEQ-T20×2* opens new possibilities for the future of gene technology. Our mission is to provide fast, cost-effective, and accurate sequencing to identify pathogens and advance precision medicine,” said Rade Drmanac, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer.

DNBSEQ-T7* Pricing and Flexibility

Dr. Yong Hou also reported on the $150 genome pricing for MGI’s flagship DNBSEQ-T7* when processing 15,000 WGS per year at 30x coverage. The DNBSEQ-T7* is a highly flexible production-scale platform, supporting up to four flow cells simultaneously for different applications, including single-cell RNA sequencing, whole exome sequencing, and whole genome sequencing. It can generate 1-6T of high-quality data per day. Powered by DNBSEQ™ Technology, the platform enhances sequencing efficiency through advances in biochemistry, fluidics, and optics, enabling large-scale projects in genomics, multi-omics, and spatial omics.
