About the TR 50 list
Since 2010, MIT Technology Review has evaluated hundreds of companies annually to identify the 50 smartest companies. Companies are assessed on high-tech innovation and successful business models, including both large corporations and startups. The list is widely recognised as a guide to emerging technologies.
MGI’s leadership in gene sequencing
MGI is one of three companies globally — and the only company in China — capable of designing and mass-producing clinical-grade high-throughput gene sequencers. Its products have served over 600 clients in more than 50 countries. With proprietary DNBSEQ™ sequencing technology, MGI has opened new horizons for sequencing development in China.
Recognition amid the COVID-19 pandemic
2020 posed unprecedented challenges. Many countries faced insufficient nucleic acid testing capacity. MGI provided over 1,000 high-throughput automated nucleic acid extraction systems to support more than 50 countries and later launched mobile packages including vehicle-mounted PCR labs, Huo-Yan Labs in cabins, and Huo-Yan Labs in tents, offering agile solutions for public health emergencies.
Innovation in medical imaging and sequencing
In addition to COVID-19 efforts, MGI made breakthroughs in medical imaging and sequencing systems. In May 2020, MGI released the world’s first remote robotic ultrasound system, MGIUS-R3, authorised by China’s NMPA.
“5 days” — rapid response laboratory
MGI’s key phrase of the year was “5 days.” Using MGI automation equipment and information systems, the Huo-Yan laboratory was built in just five days in Wuhan, China, at the centre of the pandemic. The lab can process up to 10,000 samples per day, supporting the city’s coronavirus containment efforts.
