ICG-13 Conference – Mathias Uhlén, Professor of Microbiology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and founding director of SciLifeLab, shared his research on the Mammalian Protein Brain Atlas using MGI sequencing platforms.

Dr. Uhlén praised the quality of MGI data:

“We decided to collaborate with MGI and use all the technology that has been developed by MGI. So far we are very happy with the quality of the data from the project, and it is the best quality we have ever seen.”

He emphasised that genomics is transforming precision medicine, particularly in cancer treatment, where sequencing of patient tumours is essential for selecting optimal therapies. Integrating genomics with other omics — including proteomics and metabolomics — allows researchers to understand disease at an individual level.

Since 2003, Dr. Uhlén has led the Human Protein Atlas (HPA), an open-source tissue-based map of the human proteome. The HPA integrates RNA and protein data, enabling researchers to validate gene expression across tissues. The atlas now supports approximately 300,000 researchers every month worldwide, including pharmaceutical companies in China and other countries.

Dr. Uhlén also highlighted challenges in translating population-level biomarkers to individual patient care. Using MGI sequencing, his team is advancing strategies for high-quality, high-throughput genomics that can support hospital diagnostics and individualized treatment planning.
