Riga, Latvia, 8 May 2023 – LATVIA MGI TECH, SIA (“MGI Latvia”), a subsidiary of MGI Tech Co., Ltd. (“MGI”), today announced the official opening of its large-scale production line in Latvia. MGI is committed to developing core tools and technologies to advance the life sciences. As MGI’s largest regional manufacturing hub for the European market, the Riga-based facility will support the assembly and production of DNBSEQ-G400* gene sequencing instruments and HotMPS** reagents.
“We at MGI are proud to expand our production capabilities beyond China,” said Jian Liu, Executive Vice President of MGI. “Europe has long been a technology leader and remains one of our most important markets. This launch represents another major milestone in the development of our European business as we continue to deliver effective, real-time, comprehensive and life-long solutions for our customers and partners across the region.”
At the official opening ceremony, guests unveiled the first DNBSEQ-G400* instrument produced at the Latvia site. MGI plans to gradually increase production capacity in the coming years, supported by a local team of engineers responsible for manufacturing and quality control. Aftersales support and maintenance services will also be provided by MGI Latvia.
Since commencing operations in 2019, MGI Latvia has grown into a key hub for research and development, manufacturing, logistics and specialised training in Europe and other international markets. The site represents the largest foreign investment in the biotechnology sector in Latvia and the Baltic region to date, exceeding EUR 20 million. The 7,000 square metre facility houses a Global Product Application Demo Centre and a state-of-the-art Customer Experience Center, which opened last year to showcase MGI’s latest technologies. In addition to production activities, MGI Latvia has collaborated with local and regional partners on multiple funded research initiatives, including Horizon 2020 programmes.
The DNBSEQ-G400* is a medium-throughput benchtop sequencer designed for routine sequencing applications. Its flexible flow cell system allows users to run one or two flow cells, supporting two flow cell types and a range of read lengths from SE50 to SE400 or PE300. Optimised optical and biochemical systems further improve run efficiency and deliver a streamlined sequencing experience.
HotMPS** is an innovative sequencing chemistry developed for use with the DNBSEQ-G400* and is compatible with commonly used library preparation methods. Built on MGI’s core DNBSEQ™ technology and combinatorial Probe Anchor Synthesis (cPAS), HotMPS** delivers low error rates, low duplication rates and minimal index hopping, while introducing significant advances in sequencing nucleotides and enzyme performance.
“I am delighted to see our Riga site evolve from an office, warehouse and Customer Experience Center into MGI’s first production facility in Europe,” said Dr Yong Hou, General Manager of MGI Europe and Africa. “Regional manufacturing and supply are increasingly important for our customers, and we look forward to further expanding our European production capacity to meet growing demand.”
