Bangkok, Thailand, 16 August 2023 – MGI today announced the launch of its latest automation platforms, MGISP-NEX and MGIFLP-L50, at Medlab Asia & Asia Health 2023, taking place from 16–18 August at the IMPACT Exhibition Center in Bangkok, Thailand. The two highly automated systems will be available for order in selected countries from the end of September 2023, further expanding MGI’s comprehensive product portfolio, which spans genetic sequencing, automation, single-cell solutions, and bioinformatics (BIT).
“Known for their high level of automation, flexibility, and wide applicability, the MGISP-NEX and MGIFLP-L50 systems set a new standard for laboratory automation,” said Dr Roy Tan, General Manager of MGI Asia Pacific. “These platforms provide users with a true one-stop solution, simplifying workflows, improving efficiency, and empowering customers and partners across a broad range of genomics applications.”
The MGIFLP-L50 is a modular sequencing workstation independently developed by MGI, introducing a new sequencing model that integrates nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, sequencing, and optional data analysis into a single system. Designed to address challenges associated with traditional sequencing laboratories, including complex workflows and high staffing requirements, the MGIFLP-L50 significantly reduces manual handling and improves standardisation. As a result, researchers in fields such as microbiology, reproductive health, and related disciplines can achieve higher efficiency and more consistent results.
With the MGIFLP-L50, experiment turnaround time can be reduced to under 24 hours for 4–32 samples per run, depending on the application. The system also dramatically reduces laboratory space requirements, shrinking the footprint from approximately 80 m² to less than 2 m². Equipped with three integrated modules, the platform supports multiple sample types and automates the entire workflow from nucleic acid extraction through sequencing and BIT analysis. Two flow cell options, FCS and FCL, provide flexibility to meet different throughput needs, while the optional BIT module enables automated data processing and microbial identification to support accurate pathogen detection.
The MGISP-NEX is another key automation innovation, offering a versatile, fully automated nucleic acid extraction solution. It features an independent 8-channel pipetting module alongside a magnetic rod extraction module with interchangeable 96-rod and 24-rod configurations. This flexible design allows MGISP-NEX to automate the complete extraction workflow while tracking all process information, significantly reducing manual intervention. With improved throughput and capacity, the system is well suited for applications in oncology, infectious disease, reproductive health, agricultural breeding, and more.
Also making its international debut outside China is the MGICLab-LT Automated Ultra-low Temperature Biorepository. Operating at –80°C, the system uses robotic vertical storage to provide reliable, stable, and secure preservation for a wide range of sample types, including blood, tissue, nucleic acids, proteins, and microorganisms. Supported by MGI’s broader life science tool portfolio, MGICLab-LT enables end-to-end sample and laboratory information management, maximising storage capacity and operational efficiency across the full sample life cycle.
In addition, MGI is showcasing the MGICLab-LN55K automated liquid nitrogen storage system, along with several DNBSEQ™ sequencing platforms, including DNBSEQ-G50 and DNBSEQ-G99. The MGICLab-LN55K supports SBS-standard consumables and can store up to 55,000 0.75 ml cryotubes at temperatures as low as –196°C. Featuring automated robotic retrieval and intelligent inventory management, the system delivers a fully automated and highly efficient sample storage workflow.
The compact DNBSEQ-G50 benchtop sequencer offers flexibility across a wide range of applications, including medical research, clinical diagnostics, and agriculture. Meanwhile, the CE-marked DNBSEQ-G99 delivers ultra-fast sequencing performance, with a throughput of 8–96 Gb per run and read lengths of up to PE300, making it well suited for targeted gene sequencing and small genome applications.
