Shenzhen, China, 8 February 2024 – MGI Tech, a company committed to developing core tools and technologies to lead life sciences, today announced its nomination as a finalist for the 2024 Edison Awards™ in the “Health, Medical & Biotech” category for the outstanding innovation and impact of its DNBSEQ-T20x2* gene sequencer. Established in 1987, the Edison Awards™ is one of the oldest and most esteemed technology honours globally. Named after the American inventor Thomas Edison and often called “the Oscars of tech,” the event has previously recognised achievements by luminaries such as General Motors, SpaceX, LG Electronics USA and Logitech for their exceptional contributions to service development and innovation.
All nominations are reviewed by the Edison Awards Steering Committee and a panel of judges, comprised of more than 3,000 industry experts, senior business executives, and academics from the fields of product development, design, engineering, science, marketing and education, as well as past winners. The “Health, Medical & Biotech” category honours products and services that have made a profound impact on patients and healthcare providers.
MGI’s revolutionary DNBSEQ-T20x2* ultra-high-throughput sequencer has been in the spotlight since its launch in February 2023 for successfully lowering genome sequencing costs to below $100 per genome. This breakthrough enables sequencing of a greater number of samples, or a more in-depth, informative, and accurate analysis per sample.
The commercial success of DNBSEQ-T20x2* has not only elevated sequencing capabilities but also propelled global scientific discoveries by doubling the efficiency of DNA sequencing. With its ultra-high throughput and cost-effectiveness, the sequencer is contributing to the development of the global genetic industry and driving progress in understanding the human genome and advancing medical applications.
Following its launch, DNBSEQ-T20x2* has been widely adopted by leading research institutions and healthcare providers globally, including corporate orders from Shanghai-based JMDNA Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd and Prepaire Labs, a healthcare technology company in Abu Dhabi. The DNBSEQ-T20x2* has also received numerous accolades, including the 2023 R&D 100 Awards, BEYOND Healthcare Innovation Award, 2023 BioTech Breakthrough Awards, and 2023 Globee® Awards, recognising its cutting-edge innovation.
The Edison Awards™ Gala is scheduled for 18 April in Ft. Myers, Florida, where MGI will learn whether it will receive a bronze, silver, or gold award.
