The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics Review and Awards Ceremony was recently held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. China’s COVID-19 response policy ensured the Games ran smoothly, presenting the world with a “truly exceptional Olympic Winter Games” and an “unforgettable heart-warming Winter Paralympics.”
MGI received a letter of thanks from the Emergency-Response Team for Medical Aid and Pandemic Prevention under the Winter Olympic Games Urban Operation and Environment Construction Command of Zhangjiakou City. The letter highlighted MGI’s deployment of elite personnel, core technologies, and equipment to safeguard the Zhangjiakou competition zone and support the success of the Games.
MGI’s robotic ultrasound system and automation platforms—including the MGISP-960 high-throughput automated sample preparation system, MGISTP-7000 high-throughput automated transfer processing system, and MGISP-NE384 high-throughput automated nucleic acid extractor—were deployed to ensure a COVID-safe event.
Engineers from MGI remained in the Zhangjiakou competition zone for over 90 days, overseeing installation, operation, and maintenance of these automated systems, which significantly improved nucleic acid testing efficiency.
“We volunteered to support the event as soon as we received notice. As a fan of the Olympic Games, I am extremely proud to be part of the team,” said Hua Chao. “MGI’s equipment helped deliver test reports within four hours, meeting the organising committee’s requirements.”
After the Winter Paralympics, Hua Chao completed a short home quarantine before travelling to Qingdao in Shandong Province to assist with a new round of COVID-19 control and prevention.
Veteran engineer Shiyu explained, “We made detailed plans to handle every contingency. Support and cooperation from colleagues in other departments were equally crucial.” Another key team member, Jing Hao, reflected on his experience, writing, “I came here in winter and I’m leaving in summer.”
Over 90 days, including the Chinese Spring Festival, MGI staff contributed tirelessly, representing the dedication of “ordinary” Winter Olympic personnel.
Beyond the Games, MGI has supported global COVID-19 response efforts, improving large-scale testing efficiency while ensuring safer lab environments. To date, MGI’s automation systems have assisted over 50 countries—including Singapore, Thailand, Latvia, and Sweden—contributing to global health protection.
