Guiyang, China — The China International Big Data Industry Expo 2021 (Big Data Expo 2021) has successfully concluded in Guiyang. On 29 May, Focus Report, a flagship news programme produced by China Central Television (CCTV), aired a special segment titled Innovation Drives the Future, Embracing Digital Intelligence. The programme featured MGI’s 5G-powered remote robotic ultrasound system as an example of technological innovation supporting digital healthcare.
CCTV’s Business Channel also visited MGI’s 5G-powered Robotic Ultrasound Vehicle during the exhibition. The system enables doctors to conduct ultrasound examinations remotely from a hospital while patients remain thousands of kilometres away. Its simulation-based design allows doctors and patients to communicate in real time through interactive screens supported by a high-speed 5G network.
Expanding Access to Quality Medical Services
Xinhua Net reported that the ultrasound system allows doctors in distant hospitals to connect with patients through 5G technology, delivering high-quality voluntary medical services to residents in rural areas of Guizhou Province.
The Robotic Ultrasound Vehicle offers an effective solution for regions where access to advanced medical resources is limited. Its flexibility, mobility and ease of operation help overcome common challenges in remote areas, including distance and availability of specialised healthcare services.
Advanced Robotics and Imaging Technology
Additional coverage from Xinhua Net, People’s Daily Online, Global Times and China Business Network highlighted the system’s innovative integration of robotics and medical imaging technology.
According to the reports, the system combines robotic technology, a remote real-time control platform and high-resolution ultrasound imaging. Through interactive displays, doctors and patients can communicate in real time, while the flexible robotic manipulator replicates the movements of a specialist performing the examination in person.
Supporting Digital Healthcare and Pandemic Response
MGI’s remote robotic ultrasound system is the world’s first ultrasound solution capable of delivering remote real-time diagnostics without requiring a physician to be physically present with the patient.
Beyond routine diagnostics, the technology can also support emergency rescue scenarios and long-term health management, helping expand access to high-quality medical services while accelerating the digital transformation of healthcare.
The system, known as MGIUS-R3, has also supported pandemic response efforts. It was deployed in Wuhan at Leishenshan Hospital and Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University during the COVID-19 outbreak.
By enabling remote diagnosis and reducing direct contact between patients and medical staff, the system helped lower the risk of virus transmission. Today, MGIUS-R3 supports healthcare services in more than 20 cities across China, demonstrating how advanced medical technologies can contribute to improved healthcare access and patient outcomes.
