Starting from 14 March 2022, Shenzhen entered a one-week lockdown. All bus and subway systems were suspended, and businesses not providing essential services were closed. Employees worked from home while a closed management system was implemented across communities, urban villages and industrial parks. The lockdown was also accompanied by three rounds of city-wide mass testing, according to a government notice.
In response to urgent needs from local hospitals, MGI deployed its self-developed robotic ultrasound system to Shenzhen Luohu Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, enabling zero-contact diagnosis between doctors and patients.
At this critical time, medical resources were especially valuable. Normally, doctors must wear full protective clothing before entering isolation wards and fever clinics to conduct ultrasound examinations on patients. Each examination can take up to one hour to complete and increases the risk of cross-infection between doctors and patients.
The MGI Robotic Ultrasound System, MGIUS-R3, consists of a doctor-side unit and a patient-side unit. The patient-side unit is deployed in the hospital’s fever clinic or isolation ward. With the remote ultrasound robot, doctors can conduct remote real-time diagnosis. The examination can be completed in approximately 10 minutes, improving diagnostic efficiency while eliminating the risk of cross-infection and providing greater safety and convenience for both doctors and patients.
Previously, MGIUS-R3 played an important role in remote ultrasound examinations during pandemic prevention and control efforts across China. During the Winter Olympics, the system supported doctors at Peking University Third Hospital in conducting remote real-time scanning and consultations for patients within a closed-loop system. Earlier in the year, MGIUS-R3 was delivered overnight to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University to assist doctors with cross-regional consultations, supporting Xi’an’s COVID-19 response.
