MGI Highlights Breakthrough WGS Pricing at VIB NGS Conference
Ghent, Belgium, 29 March 2023 – MGI Tech Co., Ltd. (“MGI”), a global leader in life science tools and technology, showcased its breakthrough whole genome sequencing (WGS) pricing at the 5th edition of Revolutionizing Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), a VIB Tools & Technology conference held on 27-28 March in Ghent, Belgium. The company emphasized the cost-effectiveness of its DNBSEQ-T20×2* and DNBSEQ-T7* ultra-high throughput sequencing platforms.
Achieving the $100 Genome
The industry has long aimed to reduce genome sequencing costs to $100 or less per unit. At the AGBT General Meeting 2023, MGI achieved this milestone, launching the DNBSEQ-T20×2* with a WGS cost of under $100.
At the VIB conference, Dr. Yong Hou, General Manager of MGI Europe and Africa, presented “Trailblazing Path to Sub-Hundred-Dollar Genome” during Plenary Session 3: Outbreak & Population Scale, reiterating the significance of this pricing breakthrough and its accessibility in the European market.
“This milestone and the commercialization of DNBSEQ-T20×2* mark the beginning of the $100 genome era. Lower sequencing costs will accelerate the global expansion of genomics,” said Dr. Hou. “With our growing regional team, a Customer Experience Centre in Riga, and multiple lab facilities, MGI is ready to provide cutting-edge, affordable technologies to empower customers across Europe and Africa.”
The Power of DNBSEQ-T20×2*
Using MGI’s dip-immersion biochemistry, the DNBSEQ-T20×2* significantly improves sequencing efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. A single set of DNBSEQ-T20×2* can deliver up to 50,000 WGS per year, with a per-genome cost of under $100 (30x coverage, including instrument depreciation).
Key features:
- 6-slide capacity per run
- Up to 42Tb output per run (PE100)
- Up to 72Tb output per run (PE150)
- Open modular structure, replacing traditional closed biochemical liquid circuit systems
This revolutionary platform, with its unmatched single-machine throughput, is reshaping the future of genomic research.
“Our mission is to provide faster, cost-effective, and accurate sequencing solutions—whether for pathogen identification in a post-pandemic world or advancing precision medicine,” said Dr. Rade Drmanac, Chief Scientific Officer.
DNBSEQ-T7*: The $150 Genome
Dr. Hou also discussed MGI’s $150 per genome offering for its flagship DNBSEQ-T7*, achievable when running 15,000 WGS per year at 30x coverage.
The DNBSEQ-T7* is a highly flexible, production-scale sequencer that enables:
- Simultaneous but independent operation of up to 4 flow cells
- Support for single-cell RNA sequencing, whole exome sequencing, and whole genome sequencing within different flow cells
- 1-6T of high-quality data per day
- PE150 read length
Powered by DNBSEQ Technology, the DNBSEQ-T7* offers enhanced biochemical, fluidics, and optical systems, accelerating cost reductions and enabling large-scale projects in genomics, multi-omics, and spatial omics.
