Today, we spoke with Tommy Li, Channel Manager from the MGI APAC team. Despite challenges on multiple fronts, Tommy and his team achieved strong growth in both distribution revenue and market coverage. Q: Please introduce yourself and your role at MGI.
My name is Tommy Li, and I’m a Channel Manager at MGI APAC. After earning my degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering, I spent nearly a decade as a Technical Support Engineer in the oil & gas, semiconductor, and medical sectors. During my time in the IVD industry, I saw how engineers and application specialists directly influence customer success, which inspired me to shift toward sales management in 2016 while completing my MBA.
Today, I work closely with over 30 distributors across 20+ countries to drive business growth and build long-term partnerships. Collaborating with diverse teams within MGI, I focus on expanding market presence and ensuring sustainable, collaborative success.
Q: What inspired your transition from engineering to sales?
During an organizational restructuring, a Sales Director recognized my potential and became a mentor. His journey — from process engineer to sales leader — showed me how technical expertise and relationship skills can complement each other. His guidance encouraged me to broaden my skillset and embrace new challenges, leading me to pursue a career in sales, a decision that shaped my professional path.
Q: What were your main goals in 2024, and how did you perform against them?
2024 brought economic pressures and fierce competition in the NGS market. Yet, we achieved strong growth in both distribution revenue and market coverage. Beyond commercial success, we’re proud of the broader impact — bringing NGS testing to new regions and raising awareness of its value in healthcare.
In countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, and Jordan, we completed our first NGS installations, marking key milestones for both MGI and these markets.
Q: What was your proudest moment of 2024?
Reconnecting with our regional partners at the APAC Distributor Meeting was particularly rewarding. Seeing so many cultures and backgrounds united by a shared vision reminded me of the power of collaboration. The discussions went beyond business goals — they were about building sustainable, long-term partnerships that benefit local communities as well as our companies.
Q: You’ve been recognized for your success in channel management. What are your key principles?
A good channel manager balances discipline with adaptability. While it’s essential to follow best practices, each market has unique dynamics that require flexibility. Success depends on understanding regional nuances, adjusting strategies, and responding quickly to market changes.
Our achievements stem from close, daily collaboration with our channel partners and cross-functional support within MGI:
- PMM team: provides in-depth product and sales training to strengthen partners’ confidence and effectiveness.
- Application team: delivers hands-on technical training so partners can use and demonstrate our instruments successfully.

Q: How does your role contribute to regional business growth?
The APAC region is incredibly diverse — spanning East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East — each with distinct business cultures and market behaviours. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work here.
Our job is to align global strategy with local reality. In East Asia, precision and efficiency are key; in Southeast Asia, personal relationships matter most; in the Middle East, service quality and partnership longevity take precedence. By adapting strategies to these cultural nuances, we ensure MGI’s global direction resonates locally.
Through close cooperation with regional teams, we translate global strategy into actionable, market-specific plans — balancing global cohesion with local agility.
Q: What breakthroughs did your region achieve in 2024 compared to 2023?
In 2023, we had only one distributor in India. Recognizing the country’s potential, we expanded our network to over ten partners across key regions. This diversification drove more than 100% revenue growth and significantly increased our brand visibility. The success in India shows how strategic channel expansion and localized support can accelerate growth in emerging markets.
Q: Which MGI products are most popular in your region?
The DNBSEQ-G99 has emerged as our flagship product in APAC. Its innovative design, user-friendly interface, and strong performance make it a trusted tool across research, clinical, and industrial applications. Its speed, accuracy, and versatility have made it indispensable for many partners, enabling more efficient workflows and better outcomes.
Q: What are your goals for 2025?
We plan to diversify channels by introducing dedicated networks for smaller, niche products — reaching customers like independent researchers and small labs. We’re also expanding into online sales platforms to better serve digital buyers and new markets where traditional distribution is limited. Additionally, we’re exploring wholesale centres as regional hubs for bulk orders, technical support, and closer collaboration with distributors. These strategies will enhance accessibility, responsiveness, and long-term growth across APAC.
Q: What are your wishes for the team and MGI in 2025?
As we begin a new year, I wish everyone continued success, growth, and collaboration. Let’s build on our momentum, stay focused on our mission, and keep reaching new heights together.

Q: What milestones or challenges led to this promotion?
A: A key milestone was leading the development of bioinformatics infrastructure at MGI’s new European headquarters in Berlin. We collaborated with prominent European genomics companies to create a fully operational lab for customers and collaborators. From hardware setup to workflow optimization, this project enhanced customer engagement and showcased MGI’s capabilities, strengthening our European presence.
Q: How did your previous role as FBS prepare you for this?
A: As an FBS, I handled hands-on bioinformatics, troubleshooting, and direct client support. This honed my problem-solving skills and deepened my understanding of products and customer needs. Transitioning to Associate Manager of FAS required shifting focus from individual contributions to mentoring and strategic oversight.
Q: Who or what supported your growth within MGI?
A: My growth was supported by a collaborative team, strong leadership, and peers who fostered a culture of learning. Mentorship and trust from leadership allowed me to take on challenging projects and lead initiatives successfully.

A: One rewarding moment was receiving feedback from a major customer praising how our tailored solutions improved their workflow efficiency. By integrating MGI sequencing platforms with optimized bioinformatics workflows, we enabled smoother operations and more reliable sequencing results — a testament to teamwork and the impact of our innovations.
Q: What were the main challenges of your role, and how did you overcome them?
A: Managing a dispersed team across Europe and Africa posed challenges in coordination and addressing region-specific needs. I overcame this by promoting clear communication, using digital collaboration tools, and holding regular check-ins and team-building initiatives to maintain connection and motivation.

Lewis Lusuwi

Today, we spoke with Lewis B. T. Lusuwi from the Australia team. As a Field Application Scientist focused on automation, he shared how he and the team adapted automation products to meet client needs. Read on to learn about Lewis’s experiences during this extraordinary year.
Q: Would you please introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
A: I’m Lewis B. T. Lusuwi, a Field Application Scientist Engineer (FASE) covering Australia and New Zealand. I develop tailored automation solutions for customers, including scripting, testing, and adaptation. I also provide training and tech transfer to ensure our customers can effectively use these solutions.
Q: What sparked your interest in being an automation engineer in a biology-related field?
A: I realized that the future of biological labs depends on efficient automated processes. After completing my Master’s in Biology, I saw that automation was essential for handling increasing volumes and complexity of data. Combining this with my passion for coding, I found my calling developing automation solutions at MGI.
Q: Looking back at 2024, what were your objectives and outcomes?
A: My focus was on driving automation innovation and ensuring seamless customer experiences. Key goals included developing at least six new automation scripts, supporting CEC projects, and delivering comprehensive pre- and post-sales support. We exceeded the script target, thanks to the collaboration and guidance of Dr. Haofei Wang, Dr. Karthik Pulella, and Dr. Shengnan Bi.
Q: What is your proudest achievement from 2024?
A: Receiving the Innovation Excellence Award was a highlight. Being recognized for developing creative and effective solutions motivates me to continue pushing boundaries and improving our automation offerings.
Q: Can you describe a key automation project from this year?
A: One project involved a NATA- and CAP-accredited molecular lab specializing in cancer genomics. We developed four automation scripts to optimize workflows. Challenges included meeting stringent requirements for process efficiency and consistency. By consolidating scripts and upgrading hardware to a Smart8 with onboard quantification, we streamlined workflows while maintaining high-quality results.
Q: How do you see your role contributing to regional business growth?
A: I view my role like an architect, designing the foundation for customers’ automation workflows. I work closely with the sales and implementation teams to ensure scalable, robust systems that meet customer needs and support future growth.
Q: What business breakthroughs occurred compared to 2023?
A: We successfully implemented the MGISP-Smart 8 with onboard quantification at two sites and deployed the Alphatool robot. Key achievements include creating integrated workflows from library preparation to post-capture products, improving efficiency and process consistency for our customers.
Q: Which automation products are popular, and why?
A: The MGISP-Smart 8 with onboard quantification is highly popular for its flexibility and open architecture. It integrates seamlessly with MGI workflows and most third-party kits, minimizing disruption and easing adoption in existing lab processes.

A: In 2025, I aim to enhance customer experience and professional growth. I plan to develop advanced remote monitoring solutions, streamline workflows for clinical customers, and further strengthen project management and leadership skills to boost adoption and satisfaction.

Q: What 2024 achievement are you most excited about, and its impact?
A: Two standout achievements were closing the Sabin deal and the GDM partnership. Both demonstrate perseverance, strategic alignment, and collaboration.
Sabin Deal: Partnering with Sabin, a leading diagnostics lab, involved multiple meetings, technical evaluations, and flexible reagent rentals to match their goals. This built trust, secured a long-term relationship, and positioned MGI competitively in Brazil’s clinical genomics market.
GDM Partnership: GDM became the first agricultural customer in Latin America to adopt our DNBSEQ-T7 platform. After months of technical presentations and negotiations, the installation showcased MGI’s robust, scalable technology and aligned with their innovation and sustainability goals.

Q: Can you introduce yourself and your work at MGI? How do you see your role in the HIV Host Genome Project?
A: I’m Alukhethi Singo-Ragimana, Channel Sales Manager at MGI South Africa. My role is to introduce MGI’s cutting-edge genomics technologies across Africa. In this project, we leverage NGS to analyze the host genome, identifying genetic variations linked to HIV susceptibility or resistance, providing crucial insights into disease outcomes.
Q: You published a study in 2014 on ceramic water filters and the health of people living with HIV. Can you summarize your findings?
A: Access to clean drinking water is a major issue in rural areas, especially for individuals with HIV. Our study showed that using ceramic water filters reduced waterborne diseases and improved overall health, highlighting the importance of safe water for vulnerable populations.

Shabangu Ntji
Recently, a 7th person with HIV was reported as probably cured and presented at the International AIDS Conference 2024. In the pursuit of an HIV cure, the contributions of African researchers cannot be overlooked. Decoding HIV Elite Controllers (ECs) has been a core objective of the HIV Host Genome Project for years, with MGI’s DNBSEQ™ technology playing a crucial role in revealing the natural mechanisms of HIV control in ECs. We spoke with Ntji Shabangu, MGI’s Field Application Scientist in Africa, to gain her insights into this significant project and the advancement of HIV research on the continent.
Q: Would you please introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
A: My name is Ntji Shabangu, and I am a Field Application Scientist for MGI in the sub-Saharan region, based in Cape Town, South Africa.
Q: What motivated you to start your career in a biology-related field?
A: I began my career in zoology, researching veterinary tropical diseases and using genomics to understand pathogens with potential spill over into humans. My interest in genomics grew from studying these complex diseases.
Q: How do you see your role in the HIV Host Genome Project, particularly in collaborating with the BD, sales, and marketing teams?
A: As an FAS, my role ensures that products sold to customers are used seamlessly and efficiently. This includes troubleshooting issues, helping service labs optimize costs per sample, and ensuring that our solutions maintain quality and competitiveness in the market.
Q: How has your previous experience in animal infections and sequencing technology helped support the HIV Host Genome Project?
A: Many animal pathogens are zoonotic, just like HIV, whose natural host is chimpanzees as SIVcpz. My research on Babesia rossi in black-backed jackals, which can spill over to dogs and humans, taught me the importance of understanding pathogen genomics to design therapeutics and interpret host responses. This background is pivotal in supporting experimental design and sequencing for the HIV Host Genome Project, particularly for individuals of African descent.
Q: What are the challenges in implementing the HIV Host Genome Project, and how does MGI’s technology address them?
A: Africa has the highest HIV infection rates, requiring fast, cost-effective, and high-quality sequencing. MGI’s DNBSEQ technology meets these needs with rapid library synthesis and instruments like the DNBSEQ-G99, capable of PE150 sequencing in under 12 hours, ensuring timely and reliable results for research and diagnostics.
Q: How do you see sequencing technology evolving in Africa and contributing to local HIV research?
A: Only 2% of sequenced human genomes are of African origin. By leveraging DNBSEQ, we can accelerate the sequencing of African genomes, improving disease control and enabling broader applications, including biodiversity research and agricultural solutions that support overall health and immunity.
Q: What recent advancements have you observed in local HIV research?
A: Projects like those at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, AHRI, and SAMRC are studying elite controllers and pediatric non-progressors. These efforts uncover genetic differences in immune control and help guide therapeutic development.
Q: How can MGI empower the ecosystem for the National 110K Human Genome Project?
A: MGI provides end-to-end solutions—from sample prep to sequencing and analysis. Our technology is ready to support South Africa’s 110K Human Genome Project, accelerating research and interventions for HIV and other diseases.
Q: What challenges or opportunities exist in leveraging sequencing technologies for HIV projects in Africa?
A: Africa faces infrastructure gaps, brain drain, and skill shortages. Yet initiatives like the African BioGenome Project, Africa Pathogen Genomics Initiative, and African Union Development Agency provide strong collaborative platforms. Public-private partnerships can further maximize genomics’ potential in the global south.
Q: What are the major challenges for Africans living with HIV, and how can they be improved?
A: Knowledge is the main challenge. Stigma arises from lack of awareness. Programs like the HIV Pathogenesis Program (HPP) address this by combining clinical support with education and psychosocial guidance, creating a holistic support system that should be scaled continent-wide.
Q: As a female professional, what difficulties do African women face today, and what advice would you give?
A: Contrary to stereotypes, most emerging scientists in South Africa are female. Science is no longer male-dominated. African women should continue believing in themselves and occupy space in science and other underrepresented disciplines.
Q: What’s your outlook for the future of sequencing technology in Africa?
A: Africa’s biodiversity presents vast opportunities. Sequencing technology adoption will accelerate new value chains, from therapeutics to omics-driven innovation, transforming the continent’s scientific and healthcare landscape.
Q: Aside from work, what do you do in your spare time?
A: I enjoy reading social science and policy literature and translating scientific insights for key decision-makers to inform impactful policies.
Wichai Prugpadee & Panat Damkengprasertkul
2024 marks the third year that MGI supports the Genomics Thailand Initiative. The project launched in 2022 aims to increase Thailand’s competitiveness in genomic medicine research and improve standard of medical management for its citizens. MGI bears genome sequencing task of 50,000 Thai individuals.
In this interview, we invited Wichai Prugpadee and Panat Damkengprasertkul, MGI’s field service engineers in Thailand, to share their insights into this significant project, learning about the latest outcome of the project and development of genomics and sequencing industry in Thailand through a technical perspective.
Q: Would you please briefly introduce yourself and your work in supporting the Genomics Thailand Initiative (“GTI”)?
Wichai: I was a field service engineer (“FSE”) for medical machine and electrical engineer for electrical system before joining MGI. I have been working as a FSE for MGI for 4 years. I was previously in APAC team and later divided to SEA team. It is a pleasure to be part of supporting the GTI project to achieve its goals. My work is to keep the instrument working normally, give the results for customers and provide consultation to customer when they want to expand.
Panat: Hi everyone. I’m Panat Damkengprasertkul, MGI Field Service Engineer from Thailand. Part of my work is supporting in genome sequencing lab to take care our MGI products. Sometimes we have problems and obstacles, but we can solve them with collaboration with customers and our team. I’m appreciative of my work to become a part of support in Genomics Thailand Initiative. This healthcare research project builds collaboration with Thailand Government for improved quality of Thai people’s life.
Q: How do you see MGI’s role in ensuring the success of GTI?
Wichai: I see MGI as the driving force behind this project, a leader in advanced biotechnology and a knowledgeable team that is ready to support this project to achieve its objectives.
Q: What’s the latest development or outcome of GTI?
Panat: Thai researchers can use database from Genomics Thailand project for prevention and diagnosis in cancer, rare disease, non-communicable diseases, infectious disease and pharmacogenomics.
Q: When did you join GTI? What’s your impressive moment as a role of field service engineer supporting GTI?
Wichai: I joined GTI project since site preparation for MGI DNBSEQ-T7 and work with project from the first run. The impressive moment would be that I had a chance to help customer to unbox and plan the installation of DNBSEQ-T7. That is, to transport the T7 to the room, we have to disassemble T7 to help it fit into the elevator, such as the side cover, front door. It is a challenging task but also full of fun.
Panat: I joined GTI since August 2022. My impressive moment was helping the project running smoothly. Now, we run WGS for more than 670 runs. We achieve goals for setup.
Q: Have you encountered any challenges or obstacles during the GTI? If so, how did you overcome them?
Wichai: Challenges for FSE, it would be when we want to be better. Every upgrade for better result, it would come from our team effort, including support from China Team, SEA Team and our local team. The customer also has trust on us for every schedule that we promise. For example, when we upgrade laser for better Q30 and total read, challenge would be we couldn’t know if the shape of laser was perfect or not until we assembled and tested it, while customer also waited for the machine as they had samples to sequence nonstop. In this case, we have colleagues from China to help us and remote support from our SEA Team. The support enables us to finish the upgrade on time and the customer is pleased with the results.
Panat: After upgrading to the latest version, the customer really appreciates a higher result of the sequencer with maximum total reads increased from 5900 to 6900 and sequencing time reduced by 14hrs. Now, DNBSEQ-T7 is a sequencer of better performance.
Q: From your perspective, how do you see the development of genomics in Thailand?
Wichai: Thai people have more knowledge and attention, as well as raising awareness about genetics that affect health and longevity. This knowledge comes from both public and private sectors. The government has offered free gene testing to the public, such as BRCA1 / 2. Breast cancer patients and their relatives are educated through academic events, various media including TV, websites and TV shows that are relevant to their health and happiness. The private sector also offers gene testing related to rheumatism, cancer, drug allergy, and genetic risk testing.
Panat: Government sector also encourages Thai people to access pharmacogenomics testing to prevent severe drug allergy in 4 tests with more than 40,000 samples. (1. Gene HLA-B*58:01 for Allopurinol 2. Gene HLA-B*15:02 for Carbamazepine 3. Gene HLA-B*57:01 for Abacavir 4. Gene digestive NAT2 for Isoniazid). This initiative is announced via healthcare TV, website and other online platforms.
Q: How is genomics contributing to personalized medicine and precision healthcare in Thailand?
Wichai: Genomics Thailand project provides support and education to build more knowledge of genomics experts in Thailand, including doctors, professors, academics, and laboratory practitioners. GTI provides personalized medicine education to both personnel and the general public about the importance and the interesting aspects of personalized medicine.
Panat: Genomics Thailand Project has many supports for knowledge and implementation from the Eastern Economic Corridor to improve Thailand’s Genomics. Doctors, professors, and laboratory researchers can reach out to the data for personalized medicine development for Thai people. Knowledge based on genomics information in molecular can be used for diagnosis.
Q: How has sequencing technology evolved in Thailand, and what are the key advancements that have been made in recent years?
Wichai & Panat: Sequencing technology in Thailand has evolved over many years, beginning with first-generation sequencing in research fields such as human genetics and agriculture. Adoption of second-generation sequencing (next generation sequencing) in the initial stage was mostly for research and did not evolve into a service field for a long period. The sequencing technology received a lot of attention for a few years during Covid era and the Genomics Thailand project, which began in April 2022 and had sequenced over 29,000 human genomes by Mar 2024.
Q: What are the major challenges or limitations faced by researchers in Thailand when using sequencing technology, and what strategies are being implemented to overcome them?
Panat: In my opinion, major challenge of researchers in Thailand is they don’t have enough genomics database to reach for research. However, we can make Genomics Thailand Initiative as a prototype project support to other genomics project in the future. Then, genomics projects would be able to reach funding from government sector and private sector.
Q: What’s your outlook on the development of the sequencing industry in Thailand?
Wichai: We are growing. We would be able to apply it to our normal life in many ways.
Panat: We now have genomics database in human, but we don’t have those in animal and agriculture. Thus I am looking forward to expanding our experience in GTI into projects in animal and agriculture in the future under MGI sequencing technology’s support.

In this spirit, we are excited to present an exclusive interview with Chloe Wang, the Business Development Manager at MGI APAC. With over two decades of dedication to the life sciences and a keen expertise in the Korean market, she shared her invaluable perspectives on the pivotal role of women in science and offered practical advice for women striving for success in their respective roles.
Q: Would you please introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
After completion of Ph.D., I’ve been building up my career in Life Science, Clinical Diagnostics, and global pharma company for over 20 years. I’ve started as an application scientist then moved to commercial positions as a marketing manager, sales manager, and managing director, and expanded my career to the Pharma & Diagnostic field. I’ve launched world first-in-class comprehensive liquid biopsy test for cancer patients for Korea and Taiwan as a country leader. So, I can introduce myself as a WOMEN healthcare professional.
Q: What motivates you to pursue a career in a biology-related field?
My father is a thoracic surgeon. I once heard the heartbeat of a girl who had a congenital heart disease. I was about 10 years old and the leaking air sound of the heartbeat from a pale young girl was very shocking to me. After heart transplantation, seeing her healthy face smiling brightly and running freely, I decided that when I grow up, I want to become a person who can contribute to the treatment of diseases and promote healthy and quality life. As I grew up closely observing the treatment process of patients, I naturally began my career in healthcare field.
Q: After receiving your PhD in Pathology, you first worked as a senior researcher and then took the role of business development. From your perspective, what’s the difference between the 2 roles, and what drives you to switch?
A shift to commercial role from a background in laboratory science can be quite difficult, as both fields require very different skillsets. As a medical laboratory scientist, I already had a good understanding of medical & biology field, which can be helpful in making a successful transition. However, I needed to develop new skills to do well in commercial field such as marketing myself with products, developing relationships with customers, and understanding the technology while staying alert for new cutting-edge technology and trends. Nevertheless, at that time, I wanted to escape from my tiny friends such as tissue, cell, and molecules which can be seen through microscope, meet people, develop relationships with them, and feel the lively atmosphere of the frontline real world.
Q: You joined MGI as a business development manager last year. What’s your finest moment as a role of business development manager in MGI? If possible, could you share one case you’ve been proud of?
I’ve been pouring my energy into national population genome project, and on this work I met my old customer again almost after 15 years. He is now leading one of the promising genomics service labs in Korea, and I am very excited that we can create and develop this project to be helpful for the development of both companies based on long and solid mutual trust that we’ve built up for over a decade.
Q: As a business development manager, how has your work contributed to the success of partnership? Could you please share with us one case to elaborate it?
Open communication is the backbone of any effective partnership. Each party depends on the other to stay informed. It is better to overcommunicate and be transparent than to keep one another in the dark and surprised or confused if an issue arises. It is also important to take your commitments seriously; if you have promised something by a certain day and time, then you must meet that deadline. Transparency and reliability build trust and credibility which further fosters communication between partners. You cannot imagine how many chat windows there are with each customer on my Kakao Talk, WhatsApp, and WeChat.
Q: Many people say that teamwork always contributes to success. Is there any unforgettable moment with your team members behind the successful partnership? If yes, could you please share one story?
I was an individual BD in the country until last year. And without team members behind, I could not do anything. Casey has been a good mentor for the direction and strategy, Shirley has been a knowledge bank and a good supporter for all promotion and proposal, now as a channel manager, Tommy has been a firm supporter for channel business as well as a mentor and a friend. Korea office will stop without Renee and Cici. So I can say that there is no individual contributor.
Q: I believe your insights would be valuable for us as you are a Korean market expert with over 20 years of experience. Could you please share with us how you see the development of sequencing market in South Korea?
In Korea, genomic medicine is a fast-growing and popular field; genomic research, genetic testing and precision medicine, and direct-to-consumer genetic testing are significant areas of policy attention. In terms of genomic research, Korea has one of the biggest biobanks in the world. Genetic testing is widespread and increasing, both for hereditary (mostly infant) diseases, and following cancer diagnoses for personalized treatment. A regulatory framework has been developed for these tests, but quality assurance of private testing laboratories and training for health professionals are less well-developed. Most importantly, health coverage does not appear to be keeping pace with demand from patients and clinicians, and the cost-effectiveness of widespread use of genetic testing for personalized treatment (in particular cancer) does not appear to have been established. The area which generates the most concern when it comes to genomic medicine in Korea is the booming field of direct-to-consumer genetic tests.
Q: What do you think are the advantages for women to do business development jobs?
I put this perspective with a question mark and approach it with extreme caution. Can being a woman offer some advantage in the acquisition of cumulative knowledge? The caution here is due precisely to the opinions highlighted in the Veracity Perspective, those attitudes that have been abused by men of power since antiquity and have recently become more common in various spots across the world. These opinions contend that women have a unique type of intelligence that is emotional and relational, that they are biologically prepared for raising children, and that their “natural” place as nurturers is the kitchen. Suggesting that women, as a group, may do science differently is shooting us in the foot.
Q: What do you see as the biggest challenge facing women in business development of a science-related field, and how do you overcome it?
Women must build the confidence to speak up. Despite advances in gender equality, women still experience cultural inequitable gaps in the workplace. Workplace culture for women will have four core factors that support the development of an enabling workplace culture: (1) respectful communication in the workplace, (2) a supportive and affirming environment, (3) a culturally competent environment, and (4) a workplace that values work-life balance.
Q: I notice that you are well-known for your excellent job in building and maintaining relations with customers and colleagues. Would you mind sharing some tactics on how you approach networking and building relationships with potential clients and partners?
Stay tuned and do your RESEARCH! Never reach out to a new connection without researching their interests, unmet needs, and accomplishments first. Before I reach out, I always dig into the work of the person I’m reaching out to. It can be their recent research, projects, publications, and of course prizes and promotions. Reference an effort-based accomplishment they made as specifically as possible and then ask them a question about it. Talk to them about THEM. In reality, other people are not thinking about you; they’re thinking about themselves. Remember this when you talk to them. Discuss their problems, passions, and general interests, not your own. Then the next step for networking is all about following up in small doses. It should not be massive “take” emails once or daily, and it should be “give” emails every week or two. You can also give in other small ways like consistently commenting on professional articles and social media pages. Slowly, connections will grow. Lastly, do think about “trading value”. The only way to get major value from others is to offer major value back. They need a reason. Of course, this doesn’t mean that people won’t be nice to you or do small things for you for no reason. It just means that they are too busy trying to advance their own careers and interests to be overly concerned with yours. Hence do consider “customer value” and give it back to them.
Q: From your point of view, what kinds of efforts still need to be made for an improved and optimized women-friendly working environment?
Despite advocacy, policies, and advances in gender equality over the past decades, women still experience inequitable gaps in STEMM. The fact that the proportion of women who have advanced to high-level positions in organizations, academic societies, etc., is “once in a blue moon” shows how strong the barriers of ‘glass ceiling’ and ‘leaky pipeline’ are. Gender bias faced during appointments, promotion and career improvement opportunities as well as harassment, biased evaluation by peers along with familial responsibilities could cause increased stress to women in STEMM. In most societies, women, by default, have to assume caregiver roles for circumstances such as child-care, elderly-care and during any sickness in the family. This role could affect the female scientists’ work performance. Financial support from family, household management, safe childcare facilities, flexible work timings to accommodate family duties and support from fellow female researchers can help female scientists achieve work-life balance. Certain workplaces have flexible working conditions such as working from home and flexi time, which allows women to address work and family issues. It is imperative that organizations pay attention to making workplaces conducive for female scientists.
Q: Your experience is convincing evidence that women can do just as well as men in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine). What advice would you give to women who want to achieve in STEMM?
I think that the conditions for leadership begin with ‘followership.’ What I always emphasized to juniors or team members is, “Become a person who is essential to the organization you belong to, anytime, anywhere.” To become a great female scientist, you must have not only expertise as a scientist, but also holistic virtues such as momentum, negotiation, and organizational management skills. I tried to live by building trust with the people around me without regard for interests. I believe that sincerity, honesty, and trust are the three virtues for living well in this world. “For her to become a great scientist, she must first become a great person.”
Q: Aside from work, what do you do in your spare time?
I am a professional dog walker. I have two large dogs, standard poodles. In the beginning, I started walking for the health of my dogs, but now I have fallen in love with the pleasure of walking. The moment I step out the door, walking becomes a tool to familiarize myself with the present moment and switch off what’s swirling in our head. It is good for relaxation and refreshing.
Q: Can you share the coolest thing you ever did in your daily life?
It is when I reached the fitness club at sharp 8:30pm after calling it a day for eliminating stockpile on my belly during COVID-19. Despite the demanding day I passed, when I achieve this humble feat, I feel proud of myself as I could keep a promise made to myself, despite the temptation of my wine cellar with delicious food and lovely friends! This moment assures me of the potential willpower that none, of course, wants to lose!

Today we had a talk with Letícia Marcorin, Field Application Specialist and Laboratory Manager at MGI Brazil CEC, who was fascinated by biosciences in grad school. Letícia’s seamless transition into genetics was a must, driven by an unwavering determination to understand and unravel the mysteries of genomics. Her journey is a testament to the power of mentorship and the incredible impact it can have on shaping destinies. As a woman in genomics, Letícia’s experience is a beacon of inspiration for others.
Q: Can you introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
A: My name is Letícia and I’m the Field Application Specialist and Laboratory Manager at MGI Brazil Customer Experience Center (CEC), located in São Paulo.
Q: Can you describe what a typical day or daily routine would be like when you are at work? Or can you help us to understand a bit more about what’s the major responsibility of FAS and why you think it’s important?
A: I spend most of my time helping clients implement MGI products into their labs and helping future clients understand how we can improve their routine. Now that we have the São Paulo CEC, I also spend a lot of time in the lab. Here we can test new products, help clients with tests and validations, train our distributors and local commercial team.
Q: You have been working in biotech for years, why are you interested in this field? And was there a specific reason that drove you to MGI?
A: Science had always fascinated me, but the biosciences field only became an interest in grad school. I am a chemist with a minor in forensic sciences, and during my undergrad courses I developed analytical methods to detect drugs. I wasn’t thinking about biosciences at the time, but then in my third year, I had molecular biology classes and I fell in love with it! After graduation I started my master’s in molecular biology with the same teacher that introduced me to the field the years before. The jump to genetics was a must after that. Even though I do like doing academic research, I couldn’t see myself doing it as a career. I wanted to work with molecular biology and genetics in the industry market. MGI is one of the biggest companies in this field today, so I was very happy to join the team.
Q: What’s the proudest moment in your MGI journey?
A: Planning and concluding the São Paulo CEC Lab. It was quite a challenge, but it definitely paid off. Now we have a fully equipped lab to support our LATAM teams and our clients. Come visit us and get to know the lab! It looks so nice!
Q: We know that the Brazil CEC is opening soon. Could you please share with us how the CEC lab enhances the development of regional genomics?
A: MGI is still a new brand in Brazil and clients were always asking “but how does it work?”, “what if I need assistance and support?”. Now we don’t need to convince them with only words, we can dazzle them with a fully functioning lab! We have already had many visits from clients and prospective clients, and I can assure you they were impressed. After they see what we can do, it’s much easier for them to imagine what they can do with our technology. The CEC helps clients see how our products work and understand how well equipped we are to support them. With the CEC it’s easy for clients to test drive our equipment, start new validations, and optimize protocols. They can have their team trained in a lab with high-end technology and qualified instructors. The CEC serves not just the applications team, but also has an engineering lab for equipment maintenance and training, and BIT products working in the lab for demonstrations and real analyses with our BIT specialist. The CEC is a big step into establishing MGI in Brazil and LATAM.
Q: What do you think of MGI’s technologies in Brazil? How do our technologies empower local customers and partners?
A: I think MGI has the potential to really push genomics forward in Brazil. The investments in science and technology in the country have suffered in the last few years, and being able to do good science with reasonable costs is a must. MGI offers great technology and quality results at a fair price, which enables researchers to advance their research much more. Everybody knows innovation is expensive, but science should never suffer from it, as it is the core for all innovation. I think MGI has this in mind and will keep driving innovation and enabling its clients to push their research field forward.
Q: Genomics has always been considered to be a male-dominated field. What challenges did you face as a woman forging a career in genomics, and how did you overcome them?
A: The disparities are everywhere and affect all of us, but fortunately, I think I had a pretty good experience with female representation and gender equality so far. In college I had a lot of brilliant female teachers that were leaders in their field and, even though I was in STEM, my class was pretty much half female. During my master’s and doctorate, the majority of scientists in the lab were female, both here in Brazil and during my time at the University of Toronto. What I can say is that representation matters. Seeing women succeed in our field is important, and I am very pleased to be part of it in events and interviews like this one.
Q: Women continue to be underrepresented in certain fields, including science and technology. How do you believe we can encourage and support more women to pursue careers in biotech or especially in genomics?
A: Well, the first thing is understanding women are just as capable as men; we just don’t get the same incentives. Girls should be encouraged to be more curious and think outside the box. They should be given the opportunity and incentive to play with toys that stimulate those abilities, to go to science and computer camps and do hard science courses if they want to. And women need to be better represented in the media so people can see that they can be in leadership roles, they can do science and drive innovation in technology fields. If people need to see it to believe it, then let’s show them.
Q: Do you feel that your gender gives you a different perspective and experience from your male counterparts? Any advantages?
A: It definitely does. Women and men are raised so differently it certainly shapes different views of the world. I don’t think one is necessarily better than the other, but having both perspectives in the room is surely an advantage. We can solve problems better when we have a more global understanding of them.
Q: Aside from work, what do you do in your spare time?
A: I like to read and to travel, get to know new places and cultures. It’s a good thing São Paulo is the cultural melting pot it is, so even when I’m not travelling, I can find cultural events to go to here. I also like visiting friends. Since I’ve lived in different cities, I have friends scattered everywhere and I love going to visit and spending some time with them. Music is also something I love. You can say I collect concert tickets. I just feel at home in festivals and stadiums during shows.
Q: Can you share the coolest thing you ever did in your daily life?
A: I guess going to the North Pole to see the northern lights. I had this opportunity when I was living in Canada and I had to go. Even though the northern lights were not so good that week I still loved the trip so much. The community up there is just fantastic! And I do love the cold weather. I guess this Brazilian knows colder temperatures than most Canadians and probably likes it more too.

In this exclusive interview, Nicole shared her invaluable experiences, shedding light on the challenges she faced and the successes she celebrated. Q: Would you please introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
A: I am leading the marketing team for Europe and Africa at MGI. What we do on a day-to-day basis is work very closely with all departments to find the best way to position and promote our product portfolio, how best to reach our customers, and what messaging we need to put out there for customers to easily understand our offering. It’s a broad variety of different tasks.
Q: You have been working in biotech for almost 20 years, what motivates you to pursue a career in this field?
A: I was always very interested in biology and chemistry from an early age. I majored in biology and chemistry and did my PhD in health sciences and diabetes research. Over the years, I found that I’m more interested in the technologies that I used in the lab rather than the scientific context. After my PostDoc, I decided to pursue a career outside of academia. I moved into the industry and worked as an application scientist and sales representative first. Then I moved into marketing, which is a really interesting intersection between the company and the customer. I enjoy this role where I’m still connected to research, translating it into easily digestible stories.
Q: How many staff are there in your team, and what is the male-to-female ratio?
A: We are 10 individuals in the team and currently have more women than men. We cover nationalities from Chinese to British, from South African to Latvian, and from Russian to French. We have different nationalities, languages, cultural backgrounds, and experiences in my team.
Q: How do you manage the different cultures in your team?
A: It is most important to be aware that we come from different cultural backgrounds. We need to be open, tolerant, and view it as a benefit. We need to understand that when people react unexpectedly, it might be based on cultural differences. Cross-cultural differences are a challenge but also an extremely enriching experience, broadening everybody’s horizons.
Q: How do you foster a women-friendly work environment for your team?
A: I don’t foster a women-friendly work environment; I foster a human-friendly work environment. Every individual has a different personal situation, which means different demands for workspace and flexibility in work hours. Women in my team who have children and those who don’t deserve exactly the same attention and flexibility. The most important thing is to ensure that everybody has an equal voice, no matter their background, language, or personality. When we do that, we become a much more successful team.
Q: As a woman leader, what’s the biggest challenge for women stepping into leadership? How do you overcome it?
A: Everybody in the organization faces challenges, and it depends on how you approach them. I enjoy the challenges and consider myself a servant leader, with a management style that is visionary and coaching. I nurture the talents in my team. It’s not about authority; it’s about ensuring my team is informed about developments and knows what is expected. My team finds the best way to achieve our goals, using the best tools to facilitate success. They are talented and driven.
Q: Women continue to be underrepresented in certain fields, including science and technology. How do you believe we can encourage and support more women to pursue careers in biotech?
A: There are more women than men finishing PhDs these days, but fewer women climb successfully on the career ladder. As an employer, we need to offer flexibility for employees with children. Women take most of the care work at home but are just as effective in their work as anyone else. Society should ensure housework and care work are equally distributed between fathers and mothers.
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: I’m lucky to combine one of my main interests, travel, with work. I also enjoy cooking and gardening.
Q: Can you share the coolest thing you ever did in your daily life?
A: I moved across the Atlantic several times with just two suitcases. I moved from Copenhagen, Denmark to San Francisco, USA, then back to Copenhagen. Next, I moved from Copenhagen to Boston, USA for my PostDoc, and then from Boston to London, UK, where I have lived since.

In this spirit, we are excited to present an exclusive interview with Sharon Song, the Technical Service Manager at MGI Australia. She recalls her career journey into NGS and her significant accomplishments, and provides useful advice for women to establish leadership in science.
Q: Would you please introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
A: My name is Sharon Song. Before I joined MGI in 2019, I managed a next-generation sequencing facility within Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, which provided NATA-accredited whole exome sequencing tests for a wide variety of cancer patients attending public hospitals. I have over 13 years of experience in NGS, including both short reads and long reads. I am currently working as the regional technical service manager. Our team provides support to all MGI customers in the ANZ region, including instrument installation, customer training, system repair, and troubleshooting.
Q: What motivates you to pursue a career in genomics?
A: Science was my favorite subject since high school. I pursued a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biotechnology. During my Masters, a professor specializing in genomics and Arthritis explained how genetics helps research and assists doctors in choosing the right drug for different patients. I was fascinated by the impact genomics could have on human health, which motivated me to start my career in genomics.
Q: Since you’ve specialized in NGS for over 13 years, what’s the proudest moment in your science journey?
A: A few years ago, we received an urgent sample from a very sick young AML patient. We prioritized extraction, prepared the whole exome library, performed sequencing, and completed data analysis—all within a week. We identified mutant variants suitable for a clinical trial drug, and the patient’s condition improved greatly. Receiving thanks from the clinician was the proudest moment of my genomics journey.
Q: Before you joined MGI, you worked at QUT. What drove you to MGI?
A: I wanted to expand my experience beyond research and enter industry. MGI’s unique DNBSEQ technology and its position as a leading genomics company made it an ideal choice for me.
Q: What are the unique strengths of MGI’s NGS technology?
A: Using rolling circle amplification, DNBSEQ achieves high accuracy and quality with minimal PCR bias and no error accumulation. Our platform supports a complete PCR-free workflow.
Q: Can you share an interesting story about supporting customers?
A: A customer interested in our G99 sequencer visited our demo lab and was impressed by its speed and ease-of-use. After seeing the demo data, they placed an order and we supported them further through co-marketing activities.
Q: How many staff are in your team and the male-to-female ratio?
A: We have 8 team members: 6 men and 2 women, a ratio of 3:1.

Recently, we spoke with Wim Vervaeke, Field Application Manager at the EU & AF Commercial Centre. With his extensive background in sales and product management, Wim shared his invaluable experience in building a high-performing FAS team, driving customer satisfaction, and achieving exceptional results.
Q: Can you introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
A: I am Wim Vervaeke, 45 years old, married with two wonderful daughters aged 11 and 8. I began my career at the bench, spending nearly 10 years developing my molecular biology knowledge and skills. After that, I transitioned into sales for the next 12 years, moving from regional sales specialist to NGS sales specialist and eventually NGS product manager. My role as a product manager included application support and training, which sparked my interest in the FAS position. I joined MGI as the FAS covering Benelux, but soon moved to managing the FAS team across most of Europe. With my sales experience, I believe I can help better connect the FAS team with Sales, creating synergy between both teams to continue growing and building our success.
Q: Can you describe a typical day or explain the major responsibilities of an FAS leader?
A: My primary responsibility is ensuring that our business receives full application support wherever required. Equally important, as a manager, I make sure the team can perform their jobs effectively by providing all necessary tools and information, preventing distractions. This requires significant time, as some workflows or procedures are not fully aligned with the specific requirements of our region. A typical day involves many meetings—online or offline—and emails to coordinate with other teams and solve issues the field team faces. Another key aspect is meeting with distributors to clarify the support they can expect. Clear understanding and alignment are crucial for strong partnerships.
Q: How do you create a collaborative, family-like work environment for your FAS team?
A: It’s challenging because the team is spread across a large region, and everyone is busy. We maintain regular team meetings and an active WeChat group to discuss technical issues, share experiences, and even funny or disappointing moments. I also hold regular 1-on-1 calls with each team member to discuss work, schedules, and any personal concerns. The team supports each other in the field, teaming up for complex cases and challenging trainings. When internal training happens, we try to gather as many members as possible in person. We’re also planning a team gathering next year to strengthen our FAS-family culture. There’s no secret recipe—we simply make the best of what we have.
Q: How do you keep your FAS team motivated and inspired?
A: Working in a company with a large R&D department is both exciting and challenging. The pace of releasing new products and applications keeps the team motivated—they get to work with innovative “toys.” At the same time, some products are launched prematurely, creating challenges during training or field support. Strategy changes in our region, often due to external factors, also cause stress. However, our belief in the quality of our work keeps the team going the extra mile. We also ensure tasks remain varied. Alongside sales and customer support, the team supports marketing events, conferences, and scientifically challenging projects, providing a balance that prevents routine from setting in.
Q: What are the most important elements for nurturing strong customer relationships?
A: Honesty and reliability are key. I always aim to maintain a respectful, open, and honest dialogue. Agree only to what you can deliver. Customers appreciate this transparency, which builds long-lasting relationships based on trust. Immediate responses to complaints are crucial. A complaining customer is often engaged and invested—they want to continue working with us. Pleasing customers unnecessarily can lead to future disappointment. Sometimes, saying “we can’t do this” builds more trust than trying to overpromise.
Q: What motivates you to excel as a Field Application Manager?
A: Our FAS team consists of highly skilled scientists who may lack commercial experience. My goal is to bridge the gap between scientific expertise and commercial operations, helping the team succeed in both worlds. I also ensure the team has the tools and framework to perform safely and effectively while giving them freedom, responsibility, and trust. Supporting, challenging, and guiding the team is essential, and seeing them succeed is what keeps me going.
Q: How do you feel about the NGS market in Europe?
A: I’ve had the privilege of being on the front lines since the start of the NGS era. I remember the excitement when the Human Genome Project was completed. The NGS market continues to grow with new applications. Current platforms make discovery and screening more cost-effective, enabling faster progress in research and therapy development. The future for NGS is very bright.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
A: I enjoy cooking, hiking, photography, and Lego. Most importantly, I make time to spend with my two daughters.
Brenda Alatorre
Under the mission and vision of MGI to provide tools for life sciences in massive sequencing and bring these solutions to the Latin American market, we had an interview with Brenda Alatorre, a Field Application Scientist on the MGI LATAM team. She shared her journey from being a molecular biology and genomics teacher to becoming a Field Application Scientist, as well as her confidence in advancing NGS technologies across LATAM.
Q: Can you introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
A: My name is Brenda Alatorre. I have been a biologist throughout my academic life, specializing in molecular biology. I am currently a Field Application Scientist for northern Latin America at MGI. My duties include helping customers understand and apply DNBSEQ technology, supporting them with their NGS projects, contributing to pre-sales activities, and promoting the MGI brand in LATAM.
Q: Can you describe a typical day or explain the major responsibilities of an FAS?
A: My work is split between home, office, and customer sites. At home, I focus on reading, organizing, and understanding company updates or new launches, while also responding to customer inquiries. At customer sites, I primarily train clients on new applications or instruments, including sequencers and automation robots.
Q: What motivates you to study biomedical sciences and pursue this field?
A: Since childhood, I enjoyed solving problems and understanding life from a biological perspective. Initially, I wanted to be a molecular biologist, but after attending a research talk, I realized I wanted to work behind the scenes—developing solutions that could later be applied in real life.
Q: You used to be a teacher at a private university in Mexico. What subjects did you teach, and why did you transition to FAS at MGI?
A: I taught molecular biology and genomics to medical students. While working briefly in an NGS facility, I realized I enjoyed it. When I saw the FAS position at MGI, I applied and joined the company in July. Since then, it has been an exciting journey.
Q: Did you encounter any difficulties transitioning from teaching to FAS?
A: Yes. While having a strong theoretical background was advantageous, applying theory in practice was different. I had experience with NGS, but on a different platform, so learning the details of DNBSEQ technology was challenging. Moving from academia to the corporate environment was also a big change—the pace, dynamics, and language were different. Reflecting on my first 4–5 months, I am grateful for the learning experience and very happy with my decision.
Q: How does providing services to customers differ from teaching students?
A: There are differences, but also similarities. Both students and customers seek knowledge. My experience handling conflicts between students has helped me manage customer interactions, even when they are frustrated or upset with instruments or reagents.
Q: Do you have advice for those looking to change careers into genomics?
A: Don’t be afraid. It will be challenging, but it’s possible. Career changes, while difficult, are ideal opportunities to discover what you are capable of.
Q: What has been your proudest moment promoting NGS technologies in LATAM?
A: I am proud to help make genomics more affordable and accessible, bringing tools that were once distant dreams into everyday use for researchers and clinicians.
Q: How do NGS technologies in LATAM compare with those in developed countries?
A: We still have progress to make compared to richer countries, but we are on the right path. The pandemic increased awareness of molecular biology and NGS, showing the importance of these sciences in society, particularly for the Latin population.

Q: Can you introduce yourself and your work at MGI?
A: In high school, I discovered the fascinating world of biology and pursued a degree in biology and a master’s in cellular and molecular biology. At that time, the Human Genome Project was capturing global attention. After graduate studies, I worked as a research scientist at a university. I am now a Technical Sales Specialist for MGI Brazil, helping customers access genomic technologies and making them more accessible to researchers and clinicians.
Q: Before joining MGI, you worked in the microscopy industry. How did you transition to genomics?
A: I initially worked for microscopy companies, specializing in karyotyping solutions. Over time, I realized that the future of precision and personalized medicine relies on sequencing data and analysis. That motivated me to work with genomics solutions.
Q: Can you describe a typical day or the main responsibilities of a TSS and why they are important?
A: A typical day involves reaching out to customers who need support or are considering sequencing and automation solutions. I present MGI’s end-to-end portfolio. The most important part of the job is building trust with customers and demonstrating mutual reliability.
Q: What aspects of your job do you like best?
A: I enjoy meeting people from diverse backgrounds—researchers, diagnosticians, and lab technicians—and learning about their work. For instance, I’ve learned about large lab routines, national genome projects, and sequencing applications in agriculture.
Q: What common challenges do you face in your daily work?
A: The biggest challenge is delivering value to a diverse range of customers. Many are used to salespeople selling products, but I focus on offering solutions that provide real advantages. Understanding their needs and pain points is crucial.
Q: Can you share an interesting story from your experience providing services to customers?
A: One memorable experience was helping a customer convert a facility focused on COVID-19 detection into a dedicated sequencing center. This facility now supports both diagnostic sequencing and a national genome project, becoming one of the largest in Brazil for these purposes.
Q: You were involved in the national genomic sequencing project in Brazil with Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital. What was your most memorable accomplishment?
A: It’s been an honor to work alongside brilliant professionals. I am grateful to see how high-throughput sequencing systems can support and accelerate discoveries in genomics.
Q: How do you feel about the NGS market in LATAM?
A: The NGS market in Latin America has grown rapidly over the last four years. Many countries now have access to genomics solutions and local genome projects. There is still significant room for expansion across the region.
Q: Can you share MGI’s efforts in Brazil and across LATAM?
A: MGI Brazil will open a lab in São Paulo this year, supporting customers across Brazil and LATAM. It will serve as the official office, demo center, and sales hub. Additionally, experienced teams in Peru and Mexico support the entire LATAM region.

Fernando Banos
For the healthcare industry, Latin America is a focus. As demand for NGS testing in cancer diagnosis and genetic screening rises, businesses are prioritizing support for laboratories to improve NGS-testing capabilities, focusing on affordability and faster sample processing. We spoke with Fernando Banos, Field Service Engineer for MGI LATAM, who shared his experience and insights about NGS in the region.
Q: Can you tell us more about yourself and your work at MGI?
A: I am an Electronic Engineer working with Molecular Biology instruments since 1997. I have held roles as Field Service Engineer, Supervisor, and Service Manager, but I love working directly with instruments. At MGI, my role as FSE is to ensure that Applications and Sales teams don’t worry about the instruments sold. I focus on solving problems and ensuring customer satisfaction.
Q: As a senior engineer in the biotech industry, what first motivated you to enter the field?
A: Entering this field was more a coincidence than a decision, but I was motivated by daily challenges, fixing instruments, and making customers happy. Being recognized as a professional engineer kept me in the industry and shaped my lifelong career.
Q: Can you describe a typical day and the main responsibilities of an FSE?
A: I communicate regularly with LATAM distributors, helping them solve problems and teaching them to work independently with instruments. This ensures they can handle most issues themselves.
Q: You worked in other biotech companies before. Why did you choose MGI?
A: MGI approached me, and I was attracted by the challenge of working with cutting-edge Chinese instruments and the team spirit. The team trusts my experience, allows me to make decisions, and prioritizes customer satisfaction.
Q: What fascinates you most about your current job?
A: Solving instrument failures, learning about new instruments, and sharing that knowledge with distributors and co-workers. I love being “the one” who solves problems.

A: A great engineer understands customer needs and helps them feel confident with the instrument. Customer happiness equals company happiness.
Q: You have been promoting NGS technologies across LATAM. What is your proudest moment?
A: Being recognized as a trustworthy engineer. Customers often mention me to the sales or FAS teams even before purchasing MGI instruments. Receiving positive service feedback makes me feel proud.
Q: Compared with NGS in developed countries, how do you feel about LATAM?
A: NGS adoption in LATAM is challenging due to limited research investments. Some labs can buy instruments but struggle to maintain them. IVD is still growing, and affordability remains an issue, so customers often purchase from abroad rather than locally.
Q: What do you think of MGI’s technologies in LATAM?
A: MGI faces challenges but has the willingness and resources to be recognized as a leader in NGS. The company invests in instruments, R&D, and customer support, and is open to changes that drive growth. However, progress in LATAM is slower than in developed countries.

Jay Shafto
Jay Shafto, Principal Process Engineer at Complete Genomics, has been with the company since its earliest days, working closely with Dr. Rade Drmanac. He shared his experience in process development, team leadership, and insights into the evolution of DNBSEQ technology.
Q: Can you tell us more about yourself and what’s your work at Complete Genomics?
A: At CG, I initially worked on substrate and load process development, then on data monitoring and troubleshooting when we were sequencing as a service. Now, I focus on load and substrate chemistry for higher-density and longer read-length applications R&D. My team of three works to reduce sequencing cost per base by increasing read length and DNB density.
Q: Can you describe a typical day and the major responsibilities of a Principal Process Engineer?
A: Most of my time is spent in the lab, in meetings, writing emails, or analyzing data. My team is part of the larger BioChemistry/BioInformatics group, specializing in DNB array loading R&D. I regularly meet with engineers, library R&D, sequencing chemistry, and vendors to explain what works, what doesn’t, and how to adapt technology to new applications.
Q: What are the common challenges in your work, and the most valuable lessons you’ve learned?
A: A major challenge is building a better theory of array loading to troubleshoot quickly. Another is finding hidden trends in large, diverse datasets. I’ve learned that upstream process changes can have costly unintended consequences. Practical lessons include aliquoting critical reagents, including experiment controls, and labeling graph axes.
Q: Any advice for younger scientists interested in becoming a Principal Process Engineer?
A: Stay excited and open-minded, learn every day, be available to help, and balance independent and collaborative work. Learn lab skills and programming, divide and conquer to isolate problems, and be patient without wasting opportunities.
Q: You worked with Rade at Hyseq before joining CG. What attracts you most—platform or team leader?
A: It was a good fit from the start. The team Rade built was excellent, and the work was challenging. Rade fosters a collaborative, creative environment that encourages contributions from everyone. His humility, optimism, intelligence, and drive make long-term collaboration inspiring.
Q: Tell us about your team and any recent teamwork achievements.
A: Dr. Ting Wang joined in 2019 and Dr. Khan Islammudin in 2021. We meet twice weekly to discuss results, focusing on high-copy-number DNB methods. Both have improved large DNB array quality with tangible results, and I appreciate their contributions and creative risk-taking.
Q: How do you feel about Complete Genomics’ culture and values?

A: I am Senior Director of Biochemistry at Complete Genomics. I manage a team of four researchers developing sequencing chemistry for MGI DNA sequencers.
Q: Can you describe a typical day and the major responsibilities of Biochemistry?
A: We focus on achieving high-quality DNA sequencing with long reads of 1000 bases or more. This requires higher signal intensity from DNA nanoballs (DNBs), low background, minimal signal loss, and good DNB loading on flowcells. Our research explores the biochemical factors that affect these outcomes, aiming for accurate base calls while reducing mixed intensities that could lower quality.
Q: What do you think is the most exciting or fascinating part of being a Biochemistry Scientist?
A: Understanding how biochemical systems work and being able to manipulate them to achieve desired outcomes. Identifying issues and finding solutions through technological advancements is highly rewarding.

A: Joining Complete Genomics was a natural progression from Callida Genomics, allowing us to further develop DNBs and massively parallel ordered arrays. I stay because of the talented people I work with and their commitment to advancing the technology in novel ways.

A: The early years of DNBSEQ™ development were incredible. So much new development came from those first discoveries, including multiple sequencing strategies and demonstrating accurate, reversible antibody binding.

Brock Peters
Dr. Brock Peters has served as Senior Director of Research at Complete Genomics since 2008. He leads a team developing library methods for diploid de novo assembly to enable perfect genome sequencing and has patented numerous sequencing technologies.
Q: Can you tell us more about yourself and what’s your work at Complete Genomics?
A: I’ve worked on co-barcoding method development and its applications throughout my time at Complete Genomics. This includes the original 384-barcode LFR process, intermediate processes based on thousands of barcodes, and the current stLFR process using 3.6 billion barcodes. I was also involved in single cell RNA sequencing methods.
Q: Can you describe a typical day at work?
A: I spend much of my time speaking with team members, analysing data, designing experiments, and working on ongoing projects with collaborators. I also devote time to thinking about new methods we can develop.
Q: What first inspired your interest in genomic sequencing?
A: In grad school in the early 2000s, Sanger sequencing was the main option. The Human Genome Project had just released its first draft. Targeted sequencing of cancer samples was beginning, and I saw the potential for whole-genome sequencing. Meeting Rade Drmanac and learning about Complete Genomics convinced me this was the future, so I joined shortly after leaving Genentech.
Q: You’ve spent more than 15 years at Complete Genomics. Why did you join, and what keeps you here?
A: I stay because I enjoy the technology we develop, the collaborations we engage in, and working with Rade.
Q: What moment at Complete Genomics impressed you the most or made you proud?
A: Two moments stand out. First, sequencing our first whole human genome shortly after I joined—it cost around $10,000, while other platforms were over $100,000. It felt monumental and groundbreaking. Second, publishing my work on stLFR in Nature in 2012, which was my most important work as a scientist.
Q: What are the most significant advances Complete Genomics’ technologies can bring to biological research and people’s lives?
A: We are approaching the ability to sequence a human genome to near perfection for around $100, fully phased and nearly error-free. This will make genome sequencing affordable to many and enable accurate interpretation for personalized healthcare. Over time, sequencing different parts of the body, from the gut microbiome to blood for early disease detection, will open many new applications and improve healthcare outcomes.
