The University of Lisbon (ULisboa) has launched a pioneering project using advanced sequencing technology to identify and monitor microorganisms carried by Saharan dust. The project aims to understand how these bioaerosols — increasingly frequent due to climate change — are altering Portuguese agricultural soils and impacting the quality and productivity of vineyards in key wine-producing regions, while also uncovering opportunities to enhance crop yield, quality and sustainability.

MGI Brazil Customer Experience Center Opening Ceremony
We are thrilled to announce the official opening of αLab in the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks (HKSTP), the city’s largest R&D base and one of the most important incubators. Integrating artificial intelligence R&D, application transformation and incubation platform, the brand-new laboratory aims to empower the development of the life sciences industry in Hong Kong and the rest of the world through strengthened global collaboration.
αLab, the first phase of MGI lab in HKSTP, also marks the first application of smart lab in Hong Kong. The new αLab will also be home to MGI’s first AI laboratory in Hong Kong which serves as the company’s research and development centre focusing on cutting-edge AI technology and industry applications.
In the near future, the second phase of MGI lab in HKSTP, DCS Lab, will empower and advance three fields in frontier science – namely population genomics, single-cell omics and spatiotemporal omics with MGI’s state-of-the-art tools and technology.
The “King of Speed” DNBSEQ-G99 sequencer celebrates its first anniversary, and its pace of “adapting into” the world is also moving forward rapidly. From January 24 to February 14 of 2022, MGI will unveil its new high-end core tool for revolutionizing lab automation – MGISP-Smart 8 – an automated sample preparation system in Dubai, London, Boston, and Shenzhen separately.

E25 Sequencing Reagent Preparation

Based on the unique DNBSEQ technology and innovative platform design, the MGI Atoplex MTB solution aims to streamline the identification and spoligotyping of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, detection of mutations, drug resistance prediction, and evolutionary analysis. MGI Atoplex MTB solution can complete target region amplification and library preparation within two amplification steps in one single tube, laying a foundation for resistance prediction of 15 first- and second-line anti-tuberculosis drugs and fast identification of 174 mycobacterial species. Results based on the solution can also be in as fast as 24 hours on G99 and 29 hours on E25 respectively.
HIV remains a major global health issue, affecting millions of people. Researchers worldwide are tirelessly working on new insights and therapies, with many now believing the key lies within African genetics.Scientists from University of KwaZulu-Natal(UKZN), South African Medical Research Council(SAMRC) in South Africa are studying rare HIV phenotypes, such as ‘elite controllers’: individuals who can naturally suppress HIV without antiretrovirals. This research aims to discover new therapies for people living with HIV.
Besides collaborating with researchers, MGI has also launched targeted sequencing products for HIV, streamlining the entire process from library

For centuries, mangroves have served as nature’s coastal guardians, acting as protective and vital barriers against erosion and storm surges while providing a haven for marine species. In Thailand, these ecosystems are crucial to the fishing industry, which contributes significantly to the nation’s economy. However, over the past 50 years, more than 60% of Thailand’s mangroves have been lost due to deforestation and urban development. With their disappearance comes increased vulnerability to environmental changes, making conservation efforts ever more pressing.
A research team led by Dr. Wirulda Pootakham at Thailand’s National Omic Center (NOC) under BIOTEC has been investigating the genetic diversity of Thai mangroves, which is important for prioritizing conservation strategies. In their study, they employed MGI sequencing to obtain reference genomes for various Thai mangrove species, enabling an accurate assessment of genetic diversity using high-quality DNA data.
Furthermore, MGI sequencing also supports other experiments at NOC. “I hope we can continue to use MGI technologies to conduct further studies on mangrove forests, along with several other projects we have in the lab,” remarked Dr. Wirulda Pootakham, Head of the Genomics Research Team at NOC.

The HIV Host Genome project in South Africa are attempting to unravel the mystery of how ‘elite controllers’ suppress HIV infection. By enriching global genetics knowledge, scientists from University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and their participants are not only driving the search for a cure for HIV but also illuminating the genomes of under-studied African populations in general. The HIV Host Genome project has lain the groundwork for the ambitious National 110K Human Genome Project in South Africa.
Compared to traditional genotyping by microarray, MGI’s new solution offers genome-wide data at the same cost but captures a broader range of genetic variation, enhances the discovery of new variants, and increases the statistical power of genome-wide studies, all while eliminating high design and start-up costs associated with microarrays. The dynamic features of this solution enable continuous updates and optimizations in genomic analyses.
