Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 24 January 2022 — MGI Tech Co., Ltd. (“MGI”), a global life science leader, has unveiled its new MGISP-Smart 8 automated sample preparation system at MEDLAB Middle East, held at the Dubai World Trade Center. This event marks the international debut of MGISP-Smart 8 outside China, following its launch at the ICG-16 Conference in China in October 2021. The system will be available in markets outside China from April 2022.
MGISP-Smart 8 Overview
MGISP-Smart 8 is an independent eight-channel pipetting robot offering flexible, customisable lab automation. Innovations include independent multi-channel dynamic positioning and dual-level liquid detection. With an intelligent integrated gripper and triple slide track design, the system is suitable for a range of applications, from sequencing library preparation to nucleic acid detection and sample preparation.

Our MGISP-960 and MGISP-100 simplified tedious sample preparation tasks and were well-received internationally, while MGISTP-7000 and MGISP-NE384 supported global pandemic prevention. MGISP-Smart 8 represents a major breakthrough with greater flexibility, intelligence and customisation, providing comprehensive automated workflows for diverse applications,” said Dr. Roy Tan, General Manager of MGI Asia Pacific.
Independent 8-Channel Pipette and Smart Gripper
MGISP-Smart 8 automates the pipetting and gripper functions, two core laboratory operations. Its independent eight-channel pipette enables flexible and efficient control for various tasks. The pipetting volume ranges from 1 μL to 1000 μL, with dual-level liquid detection using capacitance and pressure. The system supports pipetting across different volumes, channels and unequal intervals, adapting to microplates, reservoirs and tubes. The high-precision rotatable gripper interfaces directly with peripheral instruments and monitors grip status in real time, ensuring experimental stability.
Triple-Stacked Sliding Deck for Versatile Applications
The system features a triple-stacked sliding deck compatible with multiple modules, allowing users to combine and replace modules as needed. With 36 independent sliding tracks, MGISP-Smart 8 supports up to 30 SBS-standard layouts and seven types of consumable carriers. All deck positions include position-sensing and induction functions to prevent misplacement errors. The system is also compatible with third-party kits and flexible software protocols.
As a versatile automated pipetting system, MGISP-Smart 8 supports applications in genomics, cell biology, proteomics, drug development, microbial screening and more. By fully automating operations, laboratories can increase efficiency, reduce errors in complex liquid handling protocols, and free researchers from repetitive tasks to focus on higher-value work.
MGISP-Smart 8 will be on display at MEDLAB Middle East until 27 January. Following this, MGI will showcase the system at The Festival of Genomics & Biodata in London online (25–28 January) and SLAS 2022 in Boston (7–9 February), where attendees can explore customised protocols and the system’s flexible features.
