Auckland, New Zealand, 11 July 2025 – MGI Tech Co., Ltd. (“MGI”), a global leader in developing core tools and technologies that drive innovation in the life sciences, is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Green World Champion in the Environmental Improvement: Conservation & Wildlife Projects category at the Green World Awards 2025.
This award recognizes MGI’s pioneering efforts in applying genomics to support the conservation of Thailand’s mangrove species. In partnership with the Thai National Omics Centre, MGI is introducing genetic diversity into mangrove conservation strategies—enhancing traditional biodiversity protection methods through scientific innovation.
Genomics Meets Conservation
Mangroves play a vital ecological and economic role in coastal regions. In Thailand, they help protect shorelines and support the fishing industry. However, environmental pressures are putting these ecosystems at risk, making conservation more urgent than ever.
Genetic data is essential for understanding how mangrove species adapt to challenges such as rising sea levels, changing salinity, and habitat degradation. MGI’s proprietary DNBSEQ™ sequencing technology is central to this effort. So far, it has enabled researchers to map the genetic diversity of 15 mangrove species and establish a comprehensive reference genome database—offering critical insights for effective conservation planning.
About the Green World Awards
Established in 1994 and organized by The Green Organisation—an independent, non-profit environmental group—the Green World Awards are among the most prestigious global honours for environmental excellence. They spotlight best practices across industries, governments, and individuals who are making a real difference.
This year, MGI is one of only a handful of winners selected from over 500 entries worldwide, highlighting the global recognition of its contributions to environmental sustainability through genomics.
“We are honoured to receive the Green World Champion award, which reflects our commitment to creating a positive impact on both society and the environment. At MGI, we believe in the power of science and technology to address urgent global challenges. Through our advanced sequencing solutions, we aim to support sustainable development that benefits communities and ecosystems worldwide. Our work in mangrove conservation is just one example of how genomics can contribute to a more sustainable future.”
