Shanghai, China, 13 May 2021 — MGI showcased a range of advanced life science technologies, including gene sequencing platforms, laboratory automation systems and digital healthcare solutions, at the 84th China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF Spring 2021), held from 13 to 16 May at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai.

Genetic Sequencers Empowering Life Science Research

Gene sequencing platforms play a critical role in life science research and the development of biotechnology. MGI has developed a full portfolio of high-performance sequencing systems designed to support a wide range of research and clinical applications.

Among them, the high-throughput, cost-efficient and high-accuracy sequencer DNBSEQ-G400* was one of the first platforms used to sequence the SARS-CoV-2 genome. The system provided essential data for studying the evolutionary origins and pathogenesis of the virus. The DNBSEQ-G400* is widely used across scientific research, clinical medicine, disease prevention and control, as well as environmental and agricultural studies.

DNBSEQ-G50*

The DNBSEQ-G50* is a compact and flexible benchtop sequencer capable of analysing an average of 24 tumour samples per day.

At the high-throughput end of the portfolio, the DNBSEQ-T7*, often referred to as a “supercomputer sequencer”, can process up to 60 whole human genomes per day. Together, MGI’s flagship sequencing platforms — DNBSEQ-T7*, DNBSEQ-G400* and DNBSEQ-G50* — have supported government agencies such as customs authorities and Centres for Disease Control in pandemic research, monitoring and prevention.

Beyond China, MGI sequencing systems have also supported viral monitoring and research efforts in countries including South Korea, Thailand, Sweden, Latvia and Nigeria.

Automation Systems Supporting Large-Scale COVID-19 Testing

MGI also presented two proprietary laboratory automation systems designed to improve efficiency in high-volume testing environments: the MGISTP-3000 automated sample transfer processing system and the MGISP-960 high-throughput automated sample preparation platform.

The MGISTP-3000 is a benchtop system capable of transferring 96 samples from screw-cap transport tubes to 96-well microplates in approximately 40 minutes. It can process up to 3,500 samples per day, and up to 10,000 samples within eight hours when using pooled sample testing.

Its customisable design and automation capabilities help bridge the gap between low- and medium-throughput laboratory systems, reducing both space requirements and manual workload in testing laboratories.

Advancing Digital Healthcare and Personal Health Management

With the continued advancement of artificial intelligence and 5G technologies, the digital transformation of healthcare is expected to accelerate in the coming years. The development of intelligent laboratory information management systems has become an important trend across the life sciences industry.

The vehicle allows doctors to conduct remote ultrasound diagnosis from hospitals while patients remain thousands of kilometres away. This technology is particularly valuable for regions where access to advanced medical resources is limited.

Powered by the MGIUS-R3 remote robotic ultrasound system, the vehicle enables real-time ultrasound diagnostics through remote control and high-speed communication networks, expanding access to specialised medical care.
