Changsha, China, 8–10 October 2021 – MGI and Huazhi Biotech Co., Ltd. (Huazhi) announced a strategic partnership to promote the application of gene sequencing technology in molecular breeding.
By combining their respective strengths in biotechnology and agricultural genomics, the two organisations will collaborate on the development and application of high-throughput sequencing platforms in molecular breeding, as well as technological innovation and talent exchange.
Strategic collaboration for sequencing-driven breeding
MGI and Huazhi will work together to expand the use of advanced gene sequencing technologies in breeding programmes for crops, livestock, poultry and aquatic species. The partnership will focus on accelerating research and improving breeding efficiency through genomic technologies.
Leveraging MGI’s proprietary sequencing technologies and Huazhi’s experience in molecular breeding, the two organisations plan to establish a high-throughput sequencing service platform based on the DNBSEQ-T7RS sequencing system.
The platform aims to deliver ultra-high throughput and cost-effective sequencing services to support breeding innovation across the agricultural sector.
Driving innovation in agricultural genomics
As part of the collaboration, MGI and Huazhi will jointly launch scientific research initiatives, publish research findings and develop new technologies, tools and applications to support molecular breeding programmes.
The partnership will also promote the translation of scientific discoveries into practical agricultural solutions, contributing to the sustainable development of modern breeding industries.
Both organisations aim to address key technical challenges in molecular breeding and accelerate the adoption of sequencing technologies in areas such as resource identification, germplasm evaluation, variety protection, functional gene discovery and new variety development.
In addition, the two partners will explore cooperation in talent development, resource sharing and the establishment of industry technical standards to support long-term innovation and growth.
